Nose = Aroma + Bouquet

by David on December 14, 2010

Does it sometimes seem like we set out to make it complicated? Well, let’s uncomplicate one thing, at least.  What’s the deal with aroma and bouquet?

Aroma: This usually refers to the fragrances that come directly from the fresh grapes.

Bouquet:  This is the complexity the grape fragrance takes on by being fermented, barrel aged, bottle aged and so on.

But, most of us use the terms interchangeably.

So, why not just do away with them and talk about the nose? The nose is the way the wine smells. You like the nose… you don’t like the nose… The nose reminds you of roses…
